As part of the Malta International Arts Festival, Cosmo Strings is today giving a concert of works by Debussy to mark the composer’s 100th death anniversary.
Cosmo Strings comprises current and ex-students of the Royal Northern College of Music, all of whom have won awards or demonstrated exceptional talent.
Today’s concert features soloists Jack Bailey on cello and Liga Korne on piano.
Debussy’s sole string quartet of 1893 is particularly stark in the second movement, whose cyclic theme is classically regular yet avant-garde in development.
Korne will perform Estampes, a piece with a tangibly international disposition. Debussy’s Cello Sonata, performed by Waynne Kwon and Korne, is the first in a projected sonata cycle interrupted only by the composer’s death in 1918.
Debussy 100 will take place today at 11am at the Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo De La Salle, 219 Republic Street, Valletta. Entrance is free.
