Veteran motoring expert and Times of Malta contributor Hugh Arnett died of a heart attack on Tuesday.

Mr Arnett, who was 77, had for many years provided this newspaper with his insights on traffic and motoring issues. He was considered an expert in the field of traffic management and last year had proposed mitigating the traffic problem at junctions through the installation of traffic lights which would be operated only at rush hour and would let traffic flow freely during the rest of the day.

Mr Arnett was described by acquaintances as a true gentleman who was very passionate about cars and very meticulous. He was married to Eve and they had two daughters, Nikita and Suzanne. He was also very close to his two grandchildren. His friend, Joe Anastasi, commenting on Facebook, said Mr Arnett was one of the pioneers of motor sports in Malta and he would be greatly missed.
