A drug dealer was yesterday eager to plead guilty to trafficking near a Qormi school, refusing the assistance of a lawyer in court after having cooperated with the police in their investigations.

Clint Zammit, 22, of Qormi, who lives near the school, was jailed for two years. On Monday, he was found in possession of five grams of cocaine. The police seized paraphernalia indicating he was selling the drug.

After his arrest, he admitted to the crime straightaway, Police Inspector Jesmond Borg told the court. The officer said he thus believed the accused did not deserve a severe punishment.

Mr Zammit, who turned down the offer of a legal aid lawyer, also admitted to being in possession of the drug in circumstances denoting it was not for his exclusive use, possession of cannabis and relapsing.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella also fined him €1,000 which, upon a request of the prosecution, he can pay once he serves time.
