The newly elected president of the Malta Football Association, Norman Darmanin Demajo, has urged all members of the association to unite behind his programme.

Mr Darmanin Demajo, who was elected president of the association earlier today, defeating incumbent Joe Mifsud 77-31 in a secret ballot was invited to address the general meeting by Dr Mifsud, who, in line with the statue, continued to chair the meeting to the end.

After making his way to the stage, Mr Darmanin Demajo shook hands with Dr Mifsud, ending the bitter election campaign on a positive note.

In a short address, he said it was inevitable that during an election there were divisions because of differences of opinion.

He urged all the members of the MFA to unite behind "the programme that has been chosen".

Mr Darmanin Demajo also thanked Dr Mifsud for the long service he gave the association.

He said he was sure that Dr Mifsud, in his capacity as UEFA vice-president, would continue to work for the benefit of Maltese football.

Dr Mifsud said he was disappointed to have lost the election because everyone wanted to win "even in a friendly match".

"However, I must admit that this has taken a big weight off my shoulders.

"I am happy to be leaving a strong legacy that has been built over the past 28 years when I first became MFA vice-president," he said.
