A 62-year-old Danish crewman on a containership was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital after suffering severe chest pains while the ship was 57 miles away from Malta this afternoon.

The AFM said it scrambled an Italian Military Mission AB-212 helicopter after the alarm was raised by the ship’s agents at 1.20 p.m.

The crewman, Jens-Christian Raassi-Anderson, was hoised from the MV Georg Maersk in difficult conditions, with arough seas and strong winds.

He is now being treated in hospital.
