Gases from the Magħtab landfill are being collected, cleaned and safely released back into the atmosphere at a nearby plant.

WasteServ, the waste management agency, said the "regenerative thermal oxidiser gas compound" extracts an average 6,000 cubic metres of dangerous gases per hour and burns them between ceramic plates at about 1,000°C. The gases are then safely released into the atmosphere as part of an aerial emissions project.

The project includes the construction of gas wells, pipes and gas treatment plants that enable the successful collection and cleaning of gases before releasing them, for which the EU Regional Development Fund has allocated €8.8 million.

Magħtab was closed in 2004 and is in the process of being rehabilitated and eventually converted into a recreational park.
