I have held a UK driving license for 40 years, driving all types of vehicles, including buses and trams for 12 years. However I will not drive in Malta owing to the very poor standard of driving verging on the downright dangerous. Even as a passenger I find myself gripping the seat or belt as vehicles continually breach elementary traffic laws.

Pedestrians are equally in danger as they expect vehicles to stop or give way to them. Roundabouts, stop and give-way signs, pedestrian crossings etc. appear to be more of an inconvenience rather than a legal requirement. Signalling is almost non-existent, as is courteously giving way to other drivers. I also notice that UK citizens, now also resident here, seem to fall in line with the system.

It does not surprise me that there are so many accidents and near misses and I expect to be reading about more of them before the week is out. May I suggest that instead of booking motorists for petty offences, wardens etc. concentrate on targeting those contraventions which lead to accidents.

I fully realise that there are many good law-abiding drivers in Malta and trust they may continue to set an example.
