Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish believes Braga defender Kaka should face disciplinary action from UEFA following a clash with Andy Carroll in the Europa League last week.

Speaking ahead of today’s second leg at Anfield, Dalglish said he believed European authorities should act after Kaka appeared to elbow Carroll during last week’s 1-0 defeat in Portugal.

Dalglish’s comments came after he was asked to give his views on the impact £35m signing Carroll had made in his Euro debut last week.

“Regards Andy Carroll and impact, the biggest impact was what I was asked about after the game about him getting caught with the elbow from Kaka,” he said. “That will probably be what Andy remembers from the game.

“I never saw it in the game but I’ve seen it since and if there is no retribution from UEFA it will be a real surprise for me.”

Former Newcastle striker Carroll has appeared twice as a substitute since signing for Liverpool in January as he works his way back to fitness following a thigh injury sustained in December.

Dalglish insisted that he would not rush Carroll’s recovery.

“The fitter he gets the more tempting it will be but when that day comes I don’t know,” he added. “He is fit and well but what we do with him remains to be seen.

“Whether we will start with him or he comes on in the second half will be decided by how he does in training and what we think is best for us tomorrow (today).”
