The first daffodils of spring bloomed on cue in a village which stages one of the UK’s biggest daffodil festivals.

Flowers started appearing in Thriplow, Cambridgeshire – which will stage its annual daffodil weekend on March 26 and 27 – on St David’s Day.

Last year villagers feared visitors would be faced with nothing but green shoots after a cold winter hindered growth across Britain. Flowers appeared after temperatures rose in the days before the 2010 weekend.

Villagers launched the festival – a fête which attracts thousands and raises cash for charity – more than 40 years ago.
