Gzira United 0
Attard 1

\n

Former Balzan player Kevin Curmi, making his debut for Attard, had a remarkable first match for his new team after hitting home the winner. The three points helped Attard to keep the pace with the front-runners.

Gzira, next to bottom on the six-point mark with Dingli, had a couple of chances to go ahead but just before the break Curmi was on the right spot to head home a Stefan Cauchi cross.

Curmi could have doubled Attard's lead early in the second half while Etienne Cini's free-kick bounced off the Gzira woodwork.

Gzira tried desperately hard in the final stages to save the game but the closest they went was when Kevin Bonnici's drive just missed the desired target.

St Andrews 4
Dingli Swallows 2

St Andrews practically made sure of all points in the opening period during which they scored all their goals. Dingli tried to rally after the break but despite scoring twice they were facing a tall order which in the end proved to be too much for them.

After three minutes John Stivala headed the Saints ahead and on 18 minutes it was 2-0 thanks to a David Busuttil goal. Claude Scerri then headed home a Busuttil cross and just before half-time Stivala profited from a Dingli defensive blunder to put his team four goals to the good.

Dingli, now in a precarious position in the standings, played better after the break, Jesmond Zammit scoring from a penalty in the 55th minute. Patrick Mangion was Dingli's other scorer 11 minutes from time.

Referee: Alan Mario Sant.

Zurrieq 1
Luqa St Andrews 0

This was an important win for Zurrieq which lifted them above Dingli and Gzira in the lower end of the standings. Luqa are still rock bottom, having now conceded their sixth loss from eight outings.

The first period was a drab affair. The deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when Zurrieq hit the winner from a free-kick, scored by Philip Farrugia.

Malcolm Psaila then wasted an easy chance for Luqa and in added time Zurrieq could have sealed the issue but Jean Pierre Abdilla's shot was ably saved by the Luqa keeper.

Mellieha 0
Zebbug Rangers 0

This clash between two mid-table sides finished all-square as none of the two teams managed to pierce the opponents' defensive lines.

The two teams had to play the entire second half with a player less. First, goalkeeper David Vella was punished with a red card after handling the ball outside his box. From the free-kick, Gordon Mallia was unlucky to see his shot hitting the bar. Then, in first-half stoppage time, Rangers had midfielder Malcolm Borg sent off for a second bookable offence.

In the 66th minute Mellieha's Adrian Galea put the ball inside the Zebbug net but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

Third Division - Gharghur fail to beat nine-man Zejtun

Zejtun Corinthians 1
Gharghur 0

Gharghur played a fine match but still failed to avoid their sixth upset so far after conceding a very late goal. It was certainly not Gharghur's day... they wasted a first-half penalty and played against a team who had two players sent off in the second half. Yet, they failed to earn, at least, a draw.

The penalty was awarded after a foul on Hani Arebi Kamel in the 38th minute but Steve Barbara's shot from the spot went completely off mark.

In the 72nd minute Zejtun defender Roderick Gafa was sent off for a second booking and five minutes later team-mate Stavros Scicluna was also shown the red card for dissent.

Deep into stoppage time Zejtun caught their opponents off balance and Godwin Mifsud hit home the goal that mattered to the utter despair of the Gharghur clan.

Referee: Nicholas Debattista.

Sta Venera Lightnings 0
Pembroke Athleta 1

Pembroke broke their duck after six outings, recording their first league win of the season at the expense of fellow strugglers Sta Venera who had to play for most of the second period with ten players after defender Alfred Micallef was sent off.

Joseph Gauci scored the winner for Pembroke with 17 minutes to go when he concluded a fine solo move by Jeffrey Fenech.

Referee: Gordon Barbara.

Birzebbuga 3
Sta Lucija 1

Birzebbuga regained sole leadership after beating mid-table side Sta Lucija. Referee Spiteri ordered three penalties in this match.

Birzebbuga were awarded a penalty right on the half-hour mark after a handling infringement inside the Sta Lucija box... Camilleri made no mistake from the spot. He made it 2-0 from the spot, yet again, in the 58th minute. The penalty, this time, was ordered after a foul on Neville Farrugia by the Saints goalkeeper.

In the 67th minute Sta Lucija reduced the arrears when they, too, were given a penalty. Mario Galea pulled one back for Sta Lucija but eight minutes from time the southerners sealed the issue when Farrugia hit home after a fine run inside the opponents' half.

Referee: Juergen Spiteri.

Sirens 3
Ta' Xbiex 0

Veteran Patrick Zammit helped his team to chalk up their fourth victory of the season, scoring a brace in the process for Sirens who dominated this match from start to finish.

Zammit opened the score after 26 minutes, hitting home a Clifford Agius cross and made it 2-0 with 11 minutes to go after being put through by Antonio Portelli. Maurice Busuttil sealed the issue for Sirens in added time.

Referee: Joe Camilleri.

Ghaxaq 1
Kirkop United 2

Two Alistair Camilleri goals paved the way for this hard-earned victory for Kirkop against Ghaxaq.

They had a good start and after hitting the post, from a Mario Camilleri drive, Camilleri put his team ahead following an astute pass by Josef Mansueto.

Ray Sciberras' drive for Ghaxaq was stopped by the woodwork with Kirkop adding a second goal on 24 minutes, again through Camilleri.

Ghaxaq, led by the fine play of Sciberras, staged a strong reaction but for all their effort they only had an Angelo Portelli second-half goal to show.

Referee: Kenneth Mercieca.

Melita 0
St George's 3

Promotion-seekers St George's played one of their best matches so far to hand Melita their second defeat in the league.

In the 30th minute Keith Darmanin put the Saints ahead from a well-taken free-kick. After the interval Melita did their best to get back on level terms but were very sterile in their conclusions even though John Paul Naudi's header hit the bar.

In the 79th minute the Saints scored their second goal through substitute Larson Pace following good work by Darmanin and seven minutes from time Vince Camilleri rounded up the score for St George's with an excellent drive.

Referee: Adrian Azzopardi.
