Marlene Mizzi tried to be clever by half in her letter (How I Voted In The Referendum, May 12).

My question as to how things have changed since 2003 was in the context of what Joseph Muscat had told the New York Times then, that is, that "a country like Malta doesn't have any type of voice" in the EU. Why on earth Lawrence Gonzi and his Cabinet should answer the question is beyond me. They always believed that Malta would have a voice in the EU and facts since 2003 have proved it. It is Dr Muscat who has to answer, or Ms Mizzi, of course, as an official PL candidate for the European elections.

She then begrudgingly answered that she voted in favour of Malta's membership of the EU in the referendum. Surely, as a public figure standing for a European Parliamentary seat she should have expected her political background to become a matter for public discussion. Many voters weigh the background of candidates before they vote or before they select their preferences. The way she voted in that referendum is a part of her background.

Now we know that Ms Mizzi was prepared to jeopardise her belief in membership by taking the risk of having Alfred Sant in government after this same politician repeatedly said "God forbid that Malta should ever form part of the EU", and after he devalued her vote and the vote of the majority in the referendum by declaring that Partnership had won. No wonder she failed to answer whether she agreed with Dr Muscat that the Partnership vote had won the referendum. Many Labour supporters put Malta's future first and foremost in the election after the referendum. Ms Mizzi, as she had every right to do, chose a different, albeit risky, path.

No, I do not require any information of a personal nature from Ms Mizzi. An intelligent person such as Ms Mizzi surely should know the difference between curiosity and the right to know.
