Church weddings increased by 71 last year compared to 2014, according to statistics released by the Curia yesterday.

A total of 1,458 couples tied the knot in church last year, most – 1,248 – being Maltese nationals.

There were 71 weddings between Maltese and foreigners, including 44 between Maltese and foreign Catholics, 22 between Maltese Catholics and non-Catholic Christians and five between Maltese Catholics and non-Christians.

There were also 13 marriages between Maltese couples living abroad. The 71 foreigners who married Maltese people – 34 men and 37 women – hailed from 31 countries. Among them were 11 each from Italy and the UK.

The most popular months for Church weddings were June, May and July, in that order.

The newlyweds were mostly aged between 20 and 29.

There were 74 marriages that were “con-validated” for couples who had previously been married civilly and 20 widows or widowers who remarried. Another 38 individuals remarried after their first marriage was declared null.
