The Computer Society of Malta (CSM) has recently been accepted as a member of the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS).

This is a significant milestone for the CSM since CEPIS has stringent membership requirements, and is an acknowledgement of the high level of professionalism which the CSM has managed to achieve in recent months.

The Computer Society of Malta was established in 1992, and since its revival last March the present Council has been working hard to establish it as a professional organisation and to ensure its continued existence.

The society now has an established revenue stream, permanent offices, an office co-ordinator and a business development manager. Recent changes to its constitution include the adoption of a Code of Conduct for its members, as well as the creation of professional membership grades within its structure.

CEPIS was established in 1989 and today represents 36 computer societies from 31 European countries. It is the voice of the ICT profession in Europe, and provides a forum where its member societies meet to discuss topical issues in the ICT profession.

It participates in various international gatherings, as well as driving a number of initiatives related to skills development, ICT literacy and the raising of professional standards.

Its most popular programme is the European Computer Driving License (ECDL), which is administered through the ECDL Foundation in Ireland, a CEPIS subsidiary. The ECDL, and its non-European equivalent the International Computer Driving License, has been phenomenally successful as a benchmark of IT literacy and is being followed by 2.5 million people in 90 countries worldwide.

A more recent CEPIS initiative is the European Certification of Informatics Professional (EUCIP), which is an industry-driven competence development framework and standard for the ICT profession across Europe.

EUCIP will provide a qualification that is recognised throughout Europe, and will be implemented in partnership with training providers. EUCIP is already being rolled out in various European countries and the Computer Society of Malta plans to start local implementation in the near future.
