The closure of a world famous crystal maker in Northern Ireland today brought to an end more than two centuries of ornamental glassware production in the area.

Tyrone Crystal's decision to shut its factory in Dungannon with the loss of 31 jobs has been blamed on a global drop in demand for the type of high quality ornamental pieces the company built its reputation on. While the company had been trading for more than 40 years, the crystal making tradition in Tyrone stretches back to the 18th century.

Stormont Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the announcement was a dreadful blow for the local economy.

"Tyrone Crystal is not just a manufacturer, it is an iconic brand that has attracted tourism interest," she said.

"It has also made a positive contribution to the wider economy.

"It is a sad day to see such a long-standing employer cease manufacturing."

The closure came after attempts to find a new buyer for the famous brand failed. Announcing the decision, Tyrone Crystal sales manager Claire Bradley said she was "personally gutted".

"The Tyrone Crystal factory prides itself on producing high quality hand-made, hand-cut and hand-polished crystal ware locally," she said.

"The Tyrone Crystal brand has also been an ambassador for Ireland for many years, providing bespoke gift ware for many family occasions, foreign dignitaries and grand prix winners.

"The company and its management wish to take this opportunity to thank its loyal workforce for their valued contribution over the years and for their support during this difficult period."

Mrs Foster said the government's business promotion agency had tried to help the company.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew expressed concerns for the staff at the Tyrone Crystal plant.

She said the plant provided jobs, but also boosted the tourism industry of the area.

"Obviously this is a difficult and uncertain time for the workers and their families," she said.
