Malta International Airport saw a passenger increase of 11.2 per cent in January, over the same period last year, thanks to added capacity and a consistently positive seat load factor, which went up by 0.3 percentage points.

Traffic from the UK grew by 6.2 per cent, with growth seen  on the Liverpool, Edinburgh and Bristol routes. Traffic from Italy - the second biggest market - grew by 10.8 per cent, mainly due to increased capacity in the Northern routes.

A significant increase in capacity and seat load factor also contributed to substantial growth on the Libyan route.

“We are pleased to see that the positive trend enjoyed in 2013 has spilled over into the first month of 2014 in which we hosted a total of 199,354 passengers.” said Malta International Airport CEO Markus Klaushofer.

Meanwhile, aircraft movements for the month increased by 10.5 per cent. This was reflected in the increase of 10.6 per cent in seat capacity which reached 299,172, when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Seat Load Factor registered an increase of 0.3 percentage points, while the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) increased by 12.3 per cent when compared to 2013 figures.
