Unifaun Theatre has launched its first crowdfunding project to create a new multi-discipline arts production for Malta.

The company has adopted a new strategy to finance its next project, a project called Collapse, which will be a collaboration between local artists of different disciplines and their colleagues from California.

“We are experimenting with this new idea to keep up with modern ways of making our work viable," Unifaun artistic director Adrian Buckle said.

Through www.zaar.com.mt, Unifaun will offer patrons different rewards for the support. The rewards include free tickets for shows, priority booking, as well as a major tax rebate for larger donations.

Collapse is a multi-discipline artistic project planned for February 2017 at St James Cavalier’s Spazju Kreattiv. The project is the result of years of collaboration between local artists and colleagues from California.

Playwright Adrian Buckle has penned an original script with input from California director Dave Barton, among others.

The project also involves local artist Anthony Catania, who will be joining long-term Unifaun scenic designer Romualdo Moretti. Mr Catania has also been invited to exhibit some of his newest paintings in the St James Cavalier atrium, inspired by the myths and folk tales referred to in the play.

Collapse is set in a dystopian future under siege. The streets are chaotic and violent, with armed soldiers raping and killing at whim. A young woman named Greta, lives together with her boyfriend Robbie who is not allowed outside for the sake of his safety.

The lovers have created a bullet-proof bubble around themselves, full of stories and fairy tales, oblivious to the trouble outside . . . until Stella comes to visit. Then Greta and Robbie’s world is turned upside down.

For several years, Unifaun has staged some of Malta's finest cutting-edge theatre productions.
