With just a few hours to go before applications for this year's Gewiss Marzamemi Regatta close, skippers and crew are excited by the prospect of crossing over to Sicily for the first time.

Now a permanent fixture in the RMYC calendar, the Marzamemi regatta, setting off on Thursday, May 1, has become the club's 'Arc' where new members and boat owners are encouraged to sail to Sicily in a flotilla, making them feel more secure with more than 45 boats in close proximity.

By midweek, some 45 yachts were registered and the racing officer envisages that at least another seven boats will apply to take part before today's deadline.

One of the entries this week was Harry, skippered by Gordon Craig. This boat has just won the International Yacht Paint Double Handed Round Malta Race.

"Weather plays an important part in sailing, and with today's rating system in hand, the race committee must wait till the last boat crosses the finish line to determine the overall winner," Craig said, obviously making reference to his excellent performance during his last regatta.

Entries so far include Anthony Camilleri's brand new Bavaria Vision 50. Camilleri is expected to get his new boat across the start line come May 1.

He said: "This regatta has become a 'must do' event. So, come rain or shine, I will be there with family and friends, supporting the RMYC."

ACM Marine recently agreed to subsidise rating certificates for all Bavaria yachts that compete in the RMYC sailing series 2008. Their initiative has been very well received.

Alfred Manduca has entered his Beneteau 47.7, Allegra. He has assembled his normal line-up of crew members including Matthew Farrugia and Mark Vassallo, both RMYC members.

An interesting duel could evolve between the two out-and-out racers - Strait Dealer and Kerisma.

Both are expected to participate and one can expect some fierce competition from these two speed machines. Another tussle is looming in the 40-foot range of boats.

These are Geisha, Maltese Falcon, Horatio, Elusive, Artie, Inspiration, Bordeaux, Mischief and Aziza.

The race starts on May 1 at 8.30 a.m.

The fleet is expected back in Malta on Sunday evening.
