Fiorentina were left fuming on Friday after Hernan Crespo decided to join Genoa despite having agreed 'a formal deal' with the Firenze outfit.

A transfer move with Fiorentina was on the verge of completion for Crespo before Genoa president Enrico Preziosi announced he had signed the Argentine.

"I already have an agreement and I want it to be maintained," Fiorentina director Pantaleo Corvino argued.

"If they want to play at creating a bidding war, they are sadly mistaken. We had a formal deal, even if there was no paperwork, but we certainly will not accept an increase in the figures we already agreed."

Henry recovering from knee injury

Thierry Henry joined the rest of the Barcelona squad for training as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

The striker worked apart from the rest of the group as he bids to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League final against Manchester United, the club said, adding that midfielder Andres Iniesta, who is recuperating from a thigh strain, did some light training on his own.

Coach Pep Guardiola said he had spoken to midfielder Seydou Keita about possibly playing at left-back to fill in for the suspended Eric Abidal.

"He said he was prepared to play anywhere if it would help the team but pointed out the risk seeing as he has never played there before," Guardiola said.

Onieva pulls out of Real elections

Juan Onieva has withdrawn from the running for the Real Madrid presidency after his presentation to set out his programme was not well received in the Spanish media.

"After thinking it over, I feel obliged to take responsibility for it and abandon the electoral race," former vice president Onieva said.

Florentino Perez and little-known Eduardo Garcia are the two remaining candidates who have said they will stand. They have until May 31 to lodge a bank guarantee of €57.4 million with the club.

If there is only one candidate, he will be appointed to the post on June 1. Otherwise the vote will take place on June 14.

Wright-Phillips out of qualifiers

Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips will miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Kazakhstan next month with a knee injury.

Wright-Phillips has been sidelined since City's UEFA Cup quarter-final defeat by Hamburg and may need surgery.

"Shaun trained earlier in the week but he got a reaction so he'll have to see a specialist," City manager Mark Hughes said.

"He's obviously not available and may well have to have a wash-out of his knee in the close season. He needs to have it as soon as possible. That will enable him to start pre-season."

Hyypia - a colossus says Gerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has described Sami Hyypia as a colossus as the Finnish defender prepares to end his 10-year stint at Anfield.

The 35-year-old Hyypia will make his 464th appearance for the club against Tottenham today before moving to Bayer Leverkusen.

"It's difficult to put into words. He's been fantastic for us - a colossus," Gerrard said. He certainly deserves legendary status and he's definitely one of the best players I've ever played with. They're the biggest compliments I can pay Sami."

Hyypia, an instantly recognisable figure with his towering physique and blonde hair, has become marginalised by the emergence of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger as partners for Jamie Carragher.

Makelele to stay on at PSG

Claude Makelele will play one more year with Paris SG, the former France midfielder said.

"I'm staying because chairman Sebastien Bazin assured me the future coach was relying on me," the 36-year-old said.

"I shall probably stay on the pitch for one more year. Afterwards, I would like to work for the club, at the disposal of the chairman, the manager and the coach," the former Chelsea player added.

"I'm interested in recruiting and I think my network, my charisma and my credit as a player could help the club."

Swiss interest in Roma

Football agent Vinicio Fioranelli says the Swiss consortium he represents is keen to buy Italian club Roma, but the outlook for the deal remains clouded.

Serie A side Roma, owned by oil storage company Italpetroli and the Sensi family, have missed out on the lucrative Champions League for next season and fans have demanded fresh investment.

However, Fioranelli said the situation was complicated.

"We have the opportunity to move forward but it doesn't depend on the Sensi family, more on us," Fioranelli said.

"It is not that we don't want clarity, the situation will become clear when it is clear. But things are not clear at the moment."
