Updated: The Civil Protection Department has urged motorists to be extra careful this evening and to avoid flood-prone areas.

It said that several localities are expected to suffer heavy rainfall and hail this evening. Wind from the north-west is also expected to reach gale force.

The MIA Met office said that the Northwest wind will be strong over the Maltese Islands, and it is expected to back West Northwest and become very strong locally reaching gale force 8 at times.

The temperature was seven degrees at 7 p.m. and is expected to hover around 5 degrees tonight.

Health Department warning

The Health Department said that in view of an expected drop in temperatures it was calling on everybody to keep warm since low temperatures could be harmful, especially for the elderly and the very young.

It said buildings should be kept warm, windows should be closed and curtains drawn.

People should ensure they have enough fuel for their heaters and they should wear extra layers as well as a hat when going outdoors.

People should also drink warm drinks and take at least one hot meal.

People who are elderly or sick should be checked.

It said symptoms of hypothermia include constant shivering, tiredness, cold and pale skin and possible even a confused state of mind, weak pulse or unconsiceousness.
