Michael Mifsud will continue to spearhead Coventry City's fight for survival in The Championship and glory in the FA Cup this season.

The Malta striker, formerly of Lillestrom, had been tipped to join an English Premier League club during the January transfer window as a host of a top-flight teams were reported to be lining up bids for the 26-year-old.

However, Mifsud is now certain of staying with the Sky Blues at least until the end of the season as no deal with any of his potential, but as yet unknown, suitors was struck before last night's transfer deadline.

Speaking to The Times from his home in Warwick, Mifsud would not say much about how close he was to landing a move to the Premier League in the last few days but he did confirm that there was interest from different clubs.

"All I can say is that I was aware of interest from a number of clubs, all from the Premier League," Mifsud claimed.

"My representative handled the matter as I wanted to concentrate on my football. There were some discussions but the bottom line is that I'm still a Coventry City player."

Typically, Mifsud chose to keep his cards close to his chest but sources in the UK told The Times that one of the clubs made an offer to Coventry but refused to meet the latter's asking price for the Malta striker.

Although Mifsud has set his sights on a move to a Premier League club, he is prepared to wait for his chance.

"Joining a Premier League side would have been a great step forward in my career but I'm in no hurry," Mifsud remarked.

"I'm settled at Coventry and I'm fully committed to helping the team keep its status in The Championship. I'm optimistic about our chances of staying up."

Mifsud is Coventry's top scorer this season with 16 goals in all competitions.

He is now regarded as a key player, certainly one of the club's most prized assets, but given their precarious position in the league standings, Coventry, who parted with two other strikers last month, will have been unwilling to sell Mifsud in mid-season.

Mifsud's Premier League hopes appeared to recede after it emerged that Coventry had accepted an undisclosed offer from Bristol City for striker Dele Adebola and also agreed to let Kevin Kyle, another forward, join Wolves on loan until the end of the season.

Now, Mifsud, whose contact with Coventry ends in July 2009, must wait until the summer to rekindle his dream of playing in the Premier League.

"I will continue to give my 100 per cent in every training session and every game," Mifsud said.

"Then we'll see what comes up in the summer."
