A request by the Malta Dockers' Union to stop Virtu Ferries from carrying out loading and unloading works on Sunday has been upheld by the Courts.

The union told the court that, according to port workers' regulations, workers could not work on five specific public holidays, including May 1, unless special permission was obtained from Transport Malta.

A Virtu Ferries' catamaran had been planning to leave Malta on Sunday morning after having loaded trucks with more than 10 tonnes of merchandise without having obtained permission. The catamaran was to return in the evening for unloading.

According to law, only licensed port workers can carry out loading and unloading works when the merchandise exceeds 10 tonnes.

Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco upheld the union's request and explained that, not doing so, would create a precedent that ultimately went against the regulations.
