A court has ordered the Mepa board to put off a discussion, due to be held tomorrow, about an application for the placing of restaurant tables and chairs on the Marsaxlokk promenade.

The decision was taken at the request of the Union Haddiema Maghqudin, which represents the monti hawkers who put up stalls on the same promenade during the week.

The union requested the court to stop the meeting because its lawyers cannot be present tomorrow. Mepa had originally refused the request. The UHM argued that the fact that the lawyers could not be present meant that the hawkers could not be adequately represented.

The hawkers are opposing the use of the promenade by the restaurants.

Dr Ian Spiteri Bailey represented the UHM.
