A magistrate today ordered a man to pay €21,000 in personal guarantees after jailing him for nine months.

The amounts had been established in three separate cases, the bail conditions of which were breached.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed Jeffrey Cassar, 29 of Mosta, for nine months after he pleaded guilty to breaching the bail conditions of the three cases, disobeying police orders, causing damages to an apartment and relapsing.

Magistrate Depasquale said that if Mr Cassar failed to pay the €21,000, he would have to spend a further 18 months in jail.

Mr Cassar, who had been wanted by the police, was caught on Sunday afternoon in Kennedy Grove after a chase where he ended up jumping into the sea.

The police had gone to pick up the man from where he lived with his girlfriend in an apartment block in St Paul’s Bay. But on seeing the police, he jumped to a neighbour’s apartment causing damages.
