The brother of one of the men accused of the murders of Matthew Zahra and Mario Camilleri (l-Imniehu) and his son, described in court today how the events of the past few months have left him stuck in the middle of a split family.
Charles Galea is the brother of accused Jason Galea and or Mona Camilleri - Mario Camilleri's wife.
The bodies of the murder victims were found in the summer in a field in Birzebbuga.
Mr Galea said the situation of the past few months was like a double edged knife, On the one hand he had his brother Jason accused of multiple murders, and his sister, a grieving widow.
He said his brother used to worry a lot and was always on his mobile phone. When the murders happened, some people blamed him, Mr Galea said, and the shock grew when it was Jason who was accused of the murder.
He confirmed that his brother Jason had borrowed a car, a Skoda Felicia. The car was then found in Birzebbuga behind the church near the residence of co-accused Ronald Urry.
(In a previous sitting, Mona Camilleri said Jason Galea had made her niece wash the car with bleach following the murders)
Doris Galea, Charles Galea's wife, said she sometimes accompanied Jason Galea to Mass, and then they would drive down to Birzebbuga to have a drink at the Labour Party Club. A big black car would drive up and Jason Galea would speak to the driver. However he never told her who the driver was, other than that it was somebody collecting salaries.
At the end of the sitting, lawyer Joe Giglio, appearing for Jason Galea, complained that Alfred Attard, the owner of the field where the bodies were found, had still not testified.
Police Inspectors Louise Calleja and Fabian Fleri said the police had not decided yet whether to arraign Mr Attard.
Dr Giglio said it was time that a decision was taken, or was he going to be given a pardon?
The police insisted no decision had been taken yet on arraignment.
