A 32-year-old courier sold off a large number of mobile phones which he was supposed to be delivering, a court was told this morning. 

Inspector Silvio Magro said a court that Silvan Vassallo, from Qormi, works with UPS and had been assigned to distribute a consignment of mobile phones of various brands, including Apple and Samsung. which arrived in Malta between September and October.

But Mr Vassallo allegedly kept the phones - worth some €10,000 - and sold them at different stores.

The police managed to trace 11 of the 42 missing phones and arrest the man.

Mr Vassallo pleaded not guilty to the theft.

Lawyer Kris Busietta asked for bail, however, the prosecution protested as there are still witnesses who have to testify.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras granted bail against a €750 deposit and a personal guarantee of €10,000.
