Every household will be receiving coupons by post that can be exchanged for plastic refuse bags to be used for the recycling of packaging waste.

The coupons will be mailed in the coming days and are expected to be received by the second week of April in time for the packaging waste to start being collected from homes.

Director of Environment Policy Chris Cianter explained that the start of separate collection of packaging waste from households has been postponed to April 14 in Gozo and April 15 in Malta.

He said the government, the constituted bodies and the Local Councils Association were working to ensure that the collection system will gradually start on those dates. The postponement had been due to unforseen circumstances presented by a number of local councils, some of which were only recently appointed following elections in their locality.

He asked members of the public to wait for the coupons and than liaise with their respective local council as regards collection dates.
