A series of thefts from shops in Ghajnsielem and Victoria were solved by the police in Gozo following the arrest of a foreign couple caught red-handed breaking into a shop.

The police said the couple, a 37-year-old Belgian man and a 21-year-old Italian woman, were arrested shortly after they broke into a shop in Triq Taħt Putirjal, Victoria, yesterday afternoon.

The couple came face-to-face with the owner and ran off but the shopkeeper ran after them.

He met a traffic policeman on the way and reported the incident.

The officer gave chase as he called for backup. Although the woman managed to get away, the man was arrested at a disused factory.

The woman was eventually identified and arrested today.

Their arrest led the police to solve five cases of theft and two of attempted theft.

The couple will be arraigned in the coming days.
