A Sliema couple was yesterday accused of using and circulating false euro notes in what the police said was the biggest haul of false euro notes so far.

Marco Vella, 34, and Wendy Janet Agius, 32, pleaded not guilty to using and circulating the counterfeit euro notes and to defrauding a number of shops.

Ms Agius was also accused of relapsing.

Police Inspector Ian Joseph Abdilla told Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani that the police found the counterfeit cash at the defendants' Sliema apartment after a number of shops reported they had been given false notes.

He said the police found a total of 32 notes in €50 and €100 denominations and that this had been the biggest haul of counterfeit euro currency so far.

Magistrate Padovani granted Mr Vella and Ms Agius bail against a personal guarantee of Lm2,000 each.

Police Inspectors Ian Joseph Abdilla and Stephen Gatt prosecuted. Lawyers Joseph Giglio and José Herrera were defence counsel.
