The Valletta council is appealing to the government for assistance in the financing of the works needed for it to start operating from the former Café Premier as soon as possible.

In a statement, the council said it welcomed the government’s decision to pass on the building to the council.

The building, it said, was one of the alternatives it proposed as its headquarters and the decision showed the government had understood its need for a central location, especially in view of its work towards the city becoming European Capital of Culture in 2018.

It noted that after the previous government had decided to give the council the Main Guard, it spent a considerable amount of money to restore the place and carry out the necessary works.

As this government opted not to adhere with that decision, the council was appealing for the necessary financing for the works at the former Café.
