An employee of Zebbug local council was accused in court today of having accepted a bribe of €1,000 in order to exert influence on the council to grant a permit for hawker Christian Curmi to set up a stall in the locality's open market.

Philip Gatt, 40 of Zebbug pleaded not guilty to accepting the bribe.

Mr Curmi, 23 of Birzebbuga  was also arraigned, and accused of bribing a public officer.

Both pleaded not guilty and were granted bail against a deposit of €500 each and a personal guarantee of €2,500.
