A project that will include a football ground within the family park at Marsascala will be launched by the Prime Minister tomorrow even though the local council says it was not consulted.

Councillor Charlo Cassar said yesterday the Office of the Prime Minister informed the council in the morning all its members were invited to the project launch being held at 10am.

“I received an e-mail yesterday morning telling me I was invited for the launch. It’s a very interesting proposal but it’s very strange that the council had never been consulted about it.

“The Prime Minister hinted at such a project during the May 1 mass meeting but, other than that, we knew nothing until this morning,” the Nationalist councillor said.

He said the timing of the event seemed somewhat strange, adding that the council would usually be informed well in advance about such occasions.

“I find the timing quite bizarre. We received the e-mail a few moments after the Opposition leader announced he would be joining the Civil Society Network protest,” Mr Cassar said, adding he would not be attending the project launch but would instead be going to the protest to be held in front of Parliament tomorrow.

The Civil Society Network said the protest would serve as a call for the resignation of Minister without Portfolio Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Keith Schembri, in view of their involvement in the Panama Papers scandal.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil announced on Twitter yesterday he would be attending the event, urging people to speak up against “a Prime Minister who does not want to listen”.
