The Paola council, supported by district Labour MPs, has called on the authorities to take the necessary actions for traffic lights installed in Valletta Road four months ago to be put in operation.

Addressing a news conference on site, mayor Roderick Spiteri said that poles for pelican lights had also been put up in Palm Street but the actual lights were not installed.

The mayor said that Paola was the third biggest commercial town in Malta and it had also become a bus hub with the introduction of the Arriva service, greatly increasing traffic in the locality.

Mr Spiteri said that when the council contacted Transport Malta about the situation, the authority said it was waiting for the power supply to connect the lights.

This situation was unfair and posed a serious danger for residents and others, he said.

Labour MP Stefan Buontempo said that 66 buses passed through Paola Square every hour.
