Former Cospicua mayor Paul Muscat has passed away.

Mr Muscat had been expelled by the Labour Party after claims that he had rigged the party's 1992 leadership election. Alfred Sant won the election run-off after beating Lino Spiteri.

Mr Muscat had allegedly spoken to Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca about how he rigged the vote in favour of Dr Sant, but later he told the party's Vigilance Board, which investigated the claims, that he had actually made up the story.

The board said no tampering had taken place, but Mr Muscat was kicked out of the party.
