A consultation process on an aquaculture strategy for Malta has been launched.

Launching the strategy, Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said that aquaculture in Malta started 22 years ago with the opening of the Aquaculture Centre at San Lucjan Tower in Marsaxlokk.

The government had had a vision and understood the importance of the sector, which at that time had been non-existent. Sea bass and sea bream farms had then been developed. These were followed with tuna farms in the year 2000.

The strategy is based on 10 points namely:

  • The revision of the current situation
  • Establishing production levels
  • Identifying sites for aquaculture
  • Consultation with stakeholders
  • Research and finance
  • The streamlining of licensing procedures
  • Fish health control
  • Product diversification and commercialisation
  • Non fisheries production commercial
  • Conformity with EU directives and other international organisations regulations.

The process will take six weeks.
