The chairman of the parliamentary Social Affairs Committee, Deborah Schembri, and the committee for health, Etienne Grech, have launched a consultation among MPs on regulation which would encourage the donation of more organs for transplant.

The MPs will also be hearing proposals from stakeholders including the Organ Donation Support Group and medical experts.

The government said it would meanwhile be drawing up a White Paper for a wider public consultation.

Legislation will be debated in Parliament in the middle of next year.
