Updated - Adds consultation document in full on pdf below - Education Minister Evarist Bartolo this morning launched a two-month consultation period which would then serve as a basis for a White Paper on Education.

Addressing a news conference at the Education Ministry, Mr Bartolo said that the government is seriously considering giving more autonomy to the University, MCAST and the Commission for Higher Education by having separate laws to regulate these institutions.

He added that the new law would also seek to decentralise the system and give more autonomy to schools.

The Education Minister said that the new law should also reflect technological advances in schools as well as parents’ and students’ rights. He also floated the idea that the Education Division should no longer act as a regulator, but instead have a new entity to oversee the education sector.
