A considerable amount of jewellery items were stolen when unknown persons managed to gain access to Wignacourt Jewellery at Islet Promenade, Bugibba, over the weekend.

The theft was discovered this morning.

According to initial reports, the burglars removed stone slabs from an adjoining property and gained access to a showcase which was resting against that wall. The showcase was emptied, but other items were left untouched, leading police to suspect that the burglars never actually entered the shop. As a result, the burglar alarm did not go off.

The haul was worth many thousands of euro. However claims that as much as €100,000 worth of gold and silver items had been stolen could not be confirmed.

The police are investigating.

Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona is holding an inquiry.
