Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning appealed to Nationalists who may be hurt by decisions which affected them personally to consider the country’s interests on election day and weigh these against their own personal ones.

Speaking in an interview on Net TV, Dr Gonzi said the party wished to address the hurt these people were feeling especially if their rights had in any way been breached.

But, come election-day, everyone should consider the country’s future, job creation, the sustainability of the health sector and what had happened in neighbouring states which saw their finances disintegrate.

He promised that should the PN be re-elected, it would work to find a solution of how to deal with and address individual issues as they crop up.

Dr Gonzi promised a civil partnership law for gay couples, a bigger cabinet with new faces and more airlines operating to and from Malta with Air Malta remaining the country’s national airline.

He also said that it was time to stop objecting to Maltese living abroad voting at embassies and said that ministers’ salaries would not be increased during the next legislature. “I got the people’s message,” he said.

Dr Gonzi warned against a Labour government saying that Joseph Muscat in Opposition had already given an inkling of the wrong decisions he would take.

He had wanted to follow the Cyprus model and he would have kept the Drydocks and Sea Malta. He was also saying that he wanted to spend €300 million, which would actually be €600 million, for a power station the country did do not need.

This was when the country had an electricity cable which was to start working at the beginning next year providing the people with cheaper tariffs at night.

Dr Gonzi said that even if the global financial situation remained problematic, if the government continued to take its decisions wisely, even to the detriment of its popularity, it would gain results.

Dr Gonzi was asked about the underwater tunnel between Malta and Gozo and said that tenders had been issued for the final technical studies. This tunnel will make a great different to Gozo, removing the island’s double insularity.
