A man allegedly conned 12 elderly people out of cash by telling them he was a relative and needed money.

Patrick Spagnol, 28, of Żejtun, was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to defrauding the elderly people of between €40 and €80 during last October 3 and July 15. He was also charged with breaching the conditions of a previous release.

Police sources said the man approached elderly people and convinced them he was a relative and that he needed money.

They handed him varying amounts of cash, the biggest sum being €80.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit remanded him in custody after taking into consideration that he was not a reliable person according to the prosecution.
