A Congolese man was remanded in custody today after pleading not guilty to defrauding a jeweller of more than €75,000 worth of fake gold he allegedly sold.

Before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli, Alphonse Nsaila Dimbongi, 44, pleaded not guilty to selling the fake gold to Louis Jewellers of Marsa on October 21.

The court heard how the accused called the jeweller to tell him he had gold for sale.

The jeweller took a sample which he found to be of high quality gold so he went back to buy the rest. However, when he checked it, he found that it was fake.

The magistrate remanded the accused in custody.

Police Inspectors Silvio Magro and Sandro Millo prosecuted.
