Works on the Ta’ Pinu road in Gozo are proceeding “as planned”, according to the Gozo ministry, and are in the process of being finalised.
The works, which form part of a wider EU co-funded project, started in December last year and were expected to cost €3.7 million.
The entire project, the spokesman said, which included the reconstruction of part of Xlendi Road, to the tune of €9.5 million, should be completed by the “end of this year”.
However, Ta’ Pinu Road is expected to be opened earlier, the spokesman said. No timeframe was given when the works started.
Motorists who approach the road leading to the Ta’ Pinu sanctuary in Għarb are met with signs warning motorists of a diversion due to works on the road, prohibiting access except for residents. The road, however, is being used regularly, as motorists ignore the traffic signs.
Some residents in the area have complained that the signs are unnecessary and only causing unnecessary confusion for tourists and visitors to the island.
Other Maltese motorists who visit Gozo are also confused by the signs, putting off visits to the sanctuary because they are unsure how to get there even though signs marking a diversion through Għasri are in place.
