A conference to mark the 20th anniversary of the momentous meeting in Malta between US President George H. Bush and his Soviet counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev will be held on Friday.

Organised by MEDAC, the conference will be themed 'The End of the Cold War and the Mediterranean 1989-2009'. It will be held at the Westin Dragonara Hotel in St Julian's.

Those addressing the conference include former presidents Guido de Marco (also MEDAC chairman), Eddie Fenech Adami and Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg and John Sununu, Chief of Staff to the former US president. Former US Secretary of State James Baker is expected to deliver a video address.

The meeting will discuss the significance and impact of the Malta Summit, and the consequences of the end of the Cold War by those involved in the meeting and subsequent political developments.

The keynote concluding address will focus on the main issues that have been dominating international relations since the end of the Cold War and highlight the importance of promoting confidence-building measures in the Mediterranean.
