Labour MP Franco Mercieca this evening called on Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna to condemn what he called “hate bloggers”.

Speaking during the adjournment, Dr Mercieca said that he was four square behind the Archbishop when he condemned blogger Glen Bedingfield because he disagreed with certain comments he had made.

In an homily last Sunday, Archbishop Charles Scicluna said: “I'm warning those who are using blogs, those who use the internet to incite Maltese against other Maltese, to dig up dirt, to humiliate each other and create contempt – such instigation is madness.”

“Whoever persists in this manner will have to pay his dues in front of God,” he said, amid mounting criticism that certain political bloggers were constantly crossing the line of decency.

Dr Mercieca said today that Mgr Scicluna could not keep mum and not condemn bloggers who were more aggressive and took pride in spreading hatred.

In a tweet this evening, the Archbishop said that he confirmed what he said last Sunday.
