If you read this piece late morning or early afternoon on Sunday it could be that there are indications of the election results. The election campaign is over, a new administration has been voted in, and we have to look ahead.

The winners will be very happy while the losers will be very sore. The Government's first task is to present itself as a national Government. It is the Government of the whole nation. Concrete and positive steps should be taken so that this feeling is translated into concrete actions. The country cannot breathe with only one lung. It needs both lungs to succeed. There should be a place for all people who have talent and who are ready to offer this talent for the good of the whole country. 'Towards a more united people' was the title that our bishops used for their election pastoral letter. It echoes a sentiment which should be a programme of action. The letter specifically targets the post-election period.

It said: "Whatever service the party will be giving to the country, in Government or in Opposition, we would like to see, as from now, the political parties promising to collaborate together as servants of one nation, especially in social matters, such as the drug problem; young people and their future; usury; the protection of stability in marriage and the family; the environment; and the historical heritage."

During the electoral campaign, the parties unfortunately did not make the commitment that the bishops asked for. One hopes that it will be made now.
