Alternattiva Demokratika is in favour of any initiative that improves the general quality of life of residents and those whose livelihood depends on commercial activity in Marsascala without undermining the local environment, its chairman, Harry Vassallo, said.
He expressed concern about what he described as the over-development that is marring the characteristics of Marsascala, turning it into yet another densely populated area with all the constraints that this will have on the infrastructure. Short-term quick fixes are not on the AD's agenda, Dr Vassallo said when he met representatives of the Marsascala Business Community Association. Carmel Cacopardo, AD spokesman on sustainable development, said that many heritage sites found in the area are in a dire need of restoration and maintenance such as chapels, catacombs and dolmens, which, he said, are in a state of neglect.
