A wall of sandbags is being built around the site where turtle eggs were laid in Gnejna early this summer, amid concerns that runoff rainwater may disturb the site.

The Environment Authority and Nature Trust said every effort is being taken to maintain appropriate conditions for the survival of the turtle eggs. Sandbags are being laid around the site to prevent a rainwater stream from removing the sand and exposing the nest.

However there is also concern about water being retained beneath the nest because of a layer of blue clay. This may cause the site to become waterlogged thereby reducing the air that the turtles in the egg nest need to breathe and develop successfully.

Back in 2012 a similar summer storm may have contributed to unsuccessful hatching.
