'I was recently the unfortunate victim of a computer scam and wish to share what I've been through to prevent others from having to go through the same unpleasant experience.

'My PC got infected with a nasty virus called XP Anti Virus 2008. Apparently, it can download itself, or be sent as an e-mail or downloaded with other files. Once installed, it runs a scan of your computer and advises that there are a high number of critical threats, therefore the computer should be disinfected urgently.

'It uses fake Windows messages and screens to make you think this is a genuine Windows update. It guides you to a payment page so you can buy the software to deal with the problem. It was at this stage that I realised something was very wrong and tried to uninstall the programme. I dread to think what happens to people who disclose their credit card details.

'The programme is very difficult to uninstall and the virus seems to know that you are trying to get rid of it and blocks any attempt. Upon checking via Google, it seems that this nuisance is a worldwide scam originating in Russia or the Ukraine, and seems to modify itself so solutions for its removal no longer work. Over the course of two or three days, the virus gradually slowed down my computer until eventually it was impossible to do anything. I found the whole experience disturbing. It made me angry and upset. In a way I felt violated.

'Although I'm computer literate, I am by no means an expert and therefore I thought my best course of action would be to approach a professional for assistance.

'The positive side of my story is that my PC is now virus-free and working perfectly. I thank the staff at PC Wise Malta, of Constitution Street, Mosta, for their efficiency, reliability and excellent customer service.'
