The relatives of Raymond Caruana have had the compensation given to them by the government more than doubled, on the basis of the mechanism employed by the courts for the compensation given to the family of Karin Grech.

The money is paid from the fund for victims of crime.

The Home Affairs Ministry had explained in December that the two families had been offered compensation on the basis of a formula worked out by the Attorney General's Office.

Karin Grech's family had contested the amount of €200,000 offered to them, and a court had ordered the government to award a higher figure - €419,287.

The Caruana family had initially been offered €190,000.

On the basis of the new formula used by the court, the 11 members of the Caruana family have had their compensation of €17,272 each increased by €18,939 each.

The compensation was awarded to John Mary Caruana, Carmel Caruana, Rita Bongailas, Maria Assunta Micallef, Agnes Cutajar, Theresa Azzopardi, Tarcisio Caruana, Albert Caruana, Marianna Busuttil, Joseph Caruana and Adreana Caruana.
