According to Pursuits (April 15), in 1994, then Nationalist parliamentary secretary Ċensu Galea had offered 9,000 government-built apartments for sale to their occupants and promised that 700 units will be built within the following three years.

Today, after six years of Labour government, we have not seen any social housing project yet. Instead, prices for accommodation have been soaring beyond control, so much so that they have become unaffordable to most. Although there are vacant new places on the market, very few can either rent or buy them.

It is common knowledge that those who can neither rent nor buy property are sharing garages, sleeping in cars and even on benches in open public gardens.

The situation is shameful, degrading and outrageous in the 21st century. Yet, the Labour government still boasts that Malta is experiencing the best of times.
