Dental services in the community are to be provided through a Mobile Dental Unit, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne said today.

The service will be offered jointly by the secretariat and the University of Malta.

He was speaking at the annual conference of dentists, called Smile for Health.

Dr Fearne expressed concern over the high rate of teeth decay among children. Up to three quarters of children had bad teeth, he said, a worryingly high figure which needed to be brought down.

The Mobile Dental Unit is equipped with the same equipment normally found in a dental clinic.

The Mobile Dental Clinic is an initiative of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the University of Malta and funded by a number of corporate sponsors through the University’s Research Trust (RIDT). It aims to raise awareness about oral healthcare within the community and to collect epidemiological data which will be of value to various stakeholders.
